The mission at Dog and Human Training is to foster life-long respectful, enriching & happy pet-person relationships through the instruction of both species, using the most humane methods available.
Laura Cross is a certified & insured dog trainer. Her ABCDT certification comes from Animal Behavior College, one of the country’s most comprehensive dog training programs. Along with private lessons, she also worked training shelter dogs at the Florida Keys SPCA shelter, bringing that knowledge & experience into the mix.
Your goals are my priority. Together, we will customize your dog’s training to suit your needs & lifestyle. I will teach you & your canine companion the skills to live harmoniously together & enjoy a lifetime of loving friendship. Consultations are always free & package options are available.
Please contact me if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Every attempt will be made in each training scenario to use the Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) method. Current scientific learning principles will be applied for teaching & the bias is toward positive reinforcement. Humans have learned that these methods can solve existing behavioral challenges, facilitate faster learning, lead to better long-term retention & can even help to deter future unwanted behaviors.
Positive reinforcement training has recently been shown, scientifically, to be more effective than dominance-based training that encourages owners/handlers to behave as an “alpha”. Your pet dog is, in fact, quite different than a wolf, thanks to roughly 20,000 years of domestication. Using positive reinforcement methods, you can have a thoroughly enjoyable relationship with your dog, teaching her/him in the ways that work best for the canine brain. Dogs who learn this way retain skills longer, with better recall & you can teach your best friend guilt-free! Please note: Some cases may require methods other than positive reinforcement, but we will make every effort to adhere to the Humane Hierarchy of Behavior Change Procedures (as put forth by Dr. Susan Friedman, PhD).

Dogs vocalize & use their mouths & teeth in many ways that can be confusing, worrisome or even scary to humans. Puppies & adolescent dogs (even some adults) may mouth or nip due to excitement or frustration. Some dogs show their teeth, growl, lunge or air snap in order to guard the things they value. Many dogs react to triggers in ways that appear aggressive, but are, in fact, defensive. Many of these problematic behaviors can be handled using management techniques, desensitization, counter-conditioning & positive reinforcement. If your dog is exhibiting true aggression, real attempts to harm, please seek the help of a veterinary behaviorist or a trainer specializing in aggression treatment. These cases are currently beyond the scope of my education & experience, I am sorry.
Currently, I offer private services exclusively. If you have multiple dogs in your household, my ability to train one or all of them will be based on a thorough consultation. Rates for lessons, sessions or packages may be increased in these cases.
Important cues like ’Come’, ‘Sit’ & ‘Stay’, loose-leash walking & polite manners.

Upon consultation. A custom treatment plan will be created for you + your dog + your life. Issues I can potentially address: housetraining, excessive barking, stealing food, inappropriate chewing, jumping, and similar. Please ask your veterinarian for advice if you need help with these more severe behavioral issues: aggression, separation anxiety or compulsive disorders.

6 weekly 60-minute sessions with dog + human + trainer
Every week, your dog gets 2 one-on-one sessions, dog + trainer, of 2 hours each. I will work with your dog on things like basic obedience, polite manners & generalization of behaviors. During a weekly 1-hour transfer session, with dog + human + trainer, I show you what your dog is learning & how to work with her/him (including cues & training plans). Please note: Day training is NOT designed nor intended to solve problematic behaviors like jumping, excessive barking, housetraining, etc.
I love teaching dogs + humans! Schedule right here for a meet + greet with evaluation.
